"Crusader" sword, this heirloom quality sword is a striking example of beauty and design. The crusader cross cast within the pommel exemplifies the heroism and Christian faith that led Medieval knights through the Crusade wars. Solid wood wall display plaque included.
The Crusades created a tumultuous period when Western armies, fired with the crusading spirit, wrestled most of the Holy Land from the Moslems. Holding it was a different matter, and the Crusaders never again match their initial success. The West, still somewhat barbaric, learned a great deal from their opponents, bringing back new knowledge from their travels. (Some historians believe the Crusades helped encourage a thirst for exploration among Europeans that helped foment the discovering of America.)
The Templar Order was established in 1118 A.D. to ensure the safety of the Holy Land and to protect the pilgrimage routes. The institution reached its maximum splendour in the 13th century. The Knights Templar considered themselves to be Knights of God, the honour of the church and of Christianity. Their motto was: "NON NOBIS, DOMINE, NON NOBIS, SED TUO NOMINI DA GLORIAM." (Not to us, God, not to us, but to Your name give glory."). It was a very well-organized military force, and they were the shock forces in the Crusades. They were the vanguard during attacks and the rearguard during retreats. For a century they ensured the effective governance of the Latin kingdom of Constantinople. They did not pay taxes or tributes, and they had properties all over Europe and the Middle East. They obeyed only the Pope.
These are a must for historical collectors as well as those who appreciate a quality functional weapon comparable to those used during medieval times.
Please note: The design on the plaque may vary.
